The Best Shampoo For Oily Hair

My hair is not exactly what I would pick if I had a wish. I have fine, slow growing and oily hair. Now that being said doesn’t mean that my hair doesn’t look good going out. There are things I do to help my hair looks its best. Just because I have oily hair doesn’t mean I go around with oily hair.

Actually we don’t have oily hair, we have oily scalp that then moves down to our hair. This is caused by over active sebaceous glands that are located on our scalp and face (causing acne).

Picking a Shampoo for Oily Hair

I have tried so many shampoos. I love the smell of the Bed Head Shampoos and when I use Pantene shampoos my hair seems to grow a little faster. Well these shampoos are not for me and if you have oily hair they are probably not for you either.

Here are some great tips for picking out a great shampoo for your oily hair.

  1. Clear shampoo. They will leave less of a residue on your hair and at the same time remove the excess oil.
  2. Gentle. Claryifying shampoos can be overdrying so look for one that is gentle on your hair.
  3. Organic. Organic choices tend to be gentle since they have less chemicals that can be damaging to your hair.
  4. Natural ingredients. A lot of shampoos advertise ingredients such as avocado. However be sure to read the actual ingredients in the list and look for more natural choices.

Can I use conditioner with my oily hair?

Another way to help out your hair is to be easy on the conditioning. There are Clarifying Conditioner but if you want to use your favorite brand follow these tips. After you rinse your shampoo out, go ahead and  condition. The directions usually say to leave the conditioner in for 1-3 minutes. Try staying closer to the 1 minute time. Also rub a small amount of conditioner between your palms and then apply the the bottom section of your hair, staying away from your scalp. Then run your fingers through to free up any tangles and then immediately rinse. While rinsing  run your hands over the scalp portion of my hair to apply a very small amount of conditioner. Rinse thoroughly and I mean thoroughly. Be sure to lift your hair if its long to get the underside, and tilt my head side to side to make sure to rinse every angle. You don’t want any amount of conditioner left anywhere.

Shampoo Everyday.

I have read a lot and tried a lot of remedies to help control my oily hair. One of the common things I found is that it is suggested to not wash your hair everyday. This makes total since. If you wash your hair everyday then you are drying your hair out. So what is going to happen. Your hair is going to produce more oil to compensate. So I tried this, I tried shampooing every other day. I tried for several days. I never did notice that my hair was going to be less oily. And if you have oily hair you know that your head will become itchy and you will just feel gross if you don’t wash your hair. I couldn’t take it any more and just decided that wasn’t going to work for me. So I shampoo everyday.

Recap on how to get rid of your oily hair.

1. Shampoo with clarifying shampoo.

2. Condition with a very small amount, rub it in and rinse it off quickly and thoroughly

3. Wash your hair daily. If you have oily hair you cannot go one day without cleansing.

4. Look for organic or natural products to reduce the amount of chemicals left on your hair.

Let me know if you have any great ideas on how to control your oily hair. I would love to share them with others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly great!, January 22, 2011
By Emily K. “EmmieLou82″ (NC)
This review is from: NaturOli Soap Nuts Natural Shampoo – Organic Hair Care – Sulfate Free! – Ayurvedic Ingredients – Normal to Oily Hair – “EXTREME Hair” – Unscented – 16oz. Made with USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC Soap Nuts / Soap Berries! (Misc.)

I have long, naturally coarse hair and an oily scalp and I have tried for years to find a shampoo that wasn’t irritating and a conditioner that didn’t make my hair look dull. I can’t say I was blown away by how wonderful and flaxen my hair was after using Extreme Hair because it didn’t do much to soften it, however it worked wonders for my irritated scalp. I used to get a pinkish, itchy rash along the hairline at my neck and forehead that drove me CRAZY, but I saw a noticeable difference after using NaturOli. My scalp felt very clean, and looked white and healthy. I bought a trial size and got about 4 uses out of it and in that short amount of time it completely calmed my scalp. I was really skeptical of their claim that you ‘don’t need conditioner’ but, to my surprise, it’s true. My hair was a little hard to comb through wet but I let it dry a little and, once I got through the heavy tangles, my hair was as manageable as if I had used conditioner. I liked it well enough and will probably get more and mix up a little natural conditioner to use with it. If you value green living and don’t have horrid, unruly hair (like mine) I think this will work very well for you. I also have to add that the shipping is really reasonable. That might not make much of a difference to some, but I’ve gotten sick of paying outrageous prices for teeny packages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Scent and Doesn’t Dry Hair, December 27, 2012
This review is from: Shampoo for Oily and Greasy Hair with Organic Rosemary and Basil – 100% Natural Treatment for Oily/Greasy Hair and Itchy Scalp – Men and Women – Combats Excess Perspiration and Stimulates Cell Renewal (Misc.)

I am obsessed with the scent of this shampoo. With any hair product, the first thing you notice is definitely the way it smells, and the smell of the Degrease Moisture Control is absolutely gorgeous. This shampoo contains lemon, rosemary, and basil, and that is definitely the smell that comes across. It’s a very herbal, soothing scent that reminds of the products used in nice spas. It’s odd – I find the scent relaxing at night thanks to the rosemary, and invigorating in the mornings thanks to the lemon. It’s such a unique, beautiful smell.

But the scent alone isn’t why I adore this shampoo. While a lot of degrease shampoos leave hair incredibly dry, even when you follow up with a conditioner, this product leaves hair soft and vibrant. One of my biggest priorities when styling my hair is achieving volume at my roots, and this shampoo does an amazing job of that, even though it isn’t sold as a volumizer. However, by truly removing excess product build-up and oil at the scalp, it allows my hair to no longer be weighed down at the root, and to have a lot more volume.

This shampoo works a little differently than normal shampoos, and you have to make sure you read the directions, which tell you to let it sit on your scalp for about three minutes. It tingles a little bit, but by no means stings or irritates. My favorite trick when using this shampoo is to copy what stylists in salons do when they prepare your hair to be washed. Before you get in the shower, brush your hair thoroughly, and give yourself a light scalp massage with the pads of your fingers. This breaks up the oil and dirt at the roots and allows you to really thoroughly cleanse your scalp when you shampoo. Between using that trick and this shampoo, my scalp has never felt cleaner, and the health and vibrancy of my hair at the roots is absolutely stunning.

This shampoo is a perfect solution for anyone with an oily scalp. It’s incredibly effective, but also very gentle. My sister has a very dry hair type and no issues with oil at the roots, but she actually likes to borrow this as a once-a-week clarifying shampoo. I think it is perfect for that, and can be used to deeply cleanse the scalp, even for those who only need such a thorough cleansing once a week or month.

5.0 out of 5 stars martha o, August 9, 2011

My sister’s hair dresser told her to use this product on her hair, she did and loved it and told me about it. I was willing to try anything because my hair looked ugly and dry and I was desperate to find something that would make my hair look better. On my first try with devacare I notice a big difference in my hair. I even got compliments on how good my hair looked. The best part about using devacare products is that a little goes a long way, so it is worth the money.

I’ve have been using this shampoo for 4 weeks now. I’ve had Seborrheic Dermatitis since I was a teenager and now I’m in mid 30s. I’ve used almost everything out there, and if you have SD you already know that you need to switch between medicated shampoos to find what works for you. I should say this shampoo works fine(gets rid of the flakes in a week or two). If you’re disappointed with other products or you don’t like the smell (like T/gel), you should give this shampoo a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only stuff that works!, February 13, 2012
By Lisa G. Goldschmidt “Lisa “cooks and book… (Wayne, PA USA)

My teenage daughter has the oiliest hair I have ever see – normally she can not go even 24 hours between shampoos without looking like an oily mess. Out of desperation I purchased about 10 different oily hair shampoos (which are not that easy to find!) and we tried them all. This worked the best, and is the only one that keeps her hair looking beautiful between shampoos. She asks for me to buy it again as soon as we run out. Very very happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this stuff, May 30, 2012

I love this shampoo and can’t live without it. The eucalyptus is invigorating to the point that my husband now uses it. Its one of the only products for my hair type that keeps it clean for at least two days. It gives my hair a lot of body and doesn’t weigh it down. I use this, the Latte shampoo, and the conditioner and have very healthy hair with very few, if any, split ends. A little goes a long way as the product is ultra-concentrated, and I actually never have any problems with it lathering up, unlike another post said. I have really long hair and a bottle lasts me about 5-6 months using it about every other day. Not every shampoo works for every hair type, but this combo is the best I’ve every used!

I have really fine, limp hair. This gives my hair more volume and lets the curl last longer. I highly recommend it.
